Water-Rescue Dog Honored For Life-Saving Work

A water-rescue Newfoundland who saved 10 people during his decade-long career was recently honored posthumously with the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals Order of Merit.

Whizz, who patrolled around the Bristol Channel and River Severn in England, died earlier this month at the age of 12. In addition to his water rescue work, he also worked alongside his owner, David Pugh, as a therapy dog, according to the PDSA.

"I am bursting with pride for Whizz," Pugh said in a PDSA release. "He was a dog in a million and I am truly heartbroken that he isn’t here to receive his medal. Whizz loved working and was an extraordinary talent. Not only was he strong and gentle – he was also so emotionally intuitive. This made him the perfect therapy dog and a beloved companion to the hundreds of sick children and adults he met along the way."

Since Whizz could not accept his award, his cousin Tizz, also a water-rescue dog, accepted on his behalf.
