You’re not supposed to pet the dogs you see working at airports around the country, but in your own home, the rules no longer apply. The Transportation Security Administration is seeking homes for its retired dogs, who have spent their lives working to keep air travel safe in the United States. Also in need of new owners are young dogs who didn’t make it through the training program.
The dogs range in age from 2 to 10, and are all high-energy breeds, including German Shepherd Dogs, Belgian Malinois, Labrador Retrievers, and German Shorthaired Pointers, the TSA reports.
It’s important to note that these dogs will need a significant amount of exercise and are happier when they are given a job to do, like a canine sport or activity (click here to see a list of AKC events that might be a good fit). “Most of TSA’s dogs have lived in kennels, not houses, and thus are not familiar with living in a home environment,” the TSA explains.
All dogs have been spayed/neutered and, if approved, must be picked up by the applicant in San Antonio, Texas. There is no rehoming fee.
