Terminally Ill Boy Gets Wish to Be Army K9 Handler

Like many other young boys and girls, 9-year-old George Rios dreams of one day serving in the United States Army. His wish is to be a K9 handler. But unlike other children, Rios is terminally ill with cancer.

To help him fulfill his dream, a local army recruiter, SFC Armando Delgado, swore in Rios as Army K9 handler with his dog, Katie. Right away, he was put to work as several local organizations came together to create a suspicious package scenario for the pair to investigate. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office and Los Angeles Fire Department worked with For Veterans Sake Foundation, a veterans’ advocacy group, and Lancaster PetSmart to arrange the scenario.

“They both did an incredible job 'sniffing' out the package and ultimately saved the day!” a news release from the sheriff’s office stated. “It was a great way to make a little boy smile and to see how our amazing community pulls together when someone needs our help.”
