A police K-9 who once made headlines for nabbing the so-called “Spider-Man Burglar” in Louisiana is now fighting for his life after catching another suspect.
The Belgian Malinois, named Thor, worked with St. Tammany Parish Sheriff deputies to catch a robbery suspect on October 20. According to the sheriff’s department, deputies responded to a call from a homeowner reporting two men walking out of her house carrying valuables. One was apprehended after police chased their car down, but the other escaped. Thor tracked the suspect to a barn, but when deputies and the K-9 approached him, the man pulled out a knife at stabbed Thor. The man was shot and killed.
Thor needed emergency surgery and a blood transfusion. The sheriff’s office has been posting updates on his condition on its Facebook page and held a media briefing at 2 p.m. October 21 after Thor’s procedure. He seems to be doing well and is expected to recover.
Thor first had a brush with death in the summer of 2014 when he nabbed John Edward Green, known as the “Spider-Man Burglar” for his pattern of climbing on rooftops to enter homes. According to The Advocate, after Thor pursued Green and found him in a bus, Green allegedly pulled the K-9 into the Bogue Falaya River and tried to drown him. He was later charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, attempted killing of a police animal, among other offenses.
