AKC Pet Disaster Relief Trailers Deployed to Assist People and Pets in Tennessee

Due to the firestorm that has broken out overnight in Eastern Tennessee, there are currently AKC Pet Disaster Relief Trailers deployed with volunteers helping to provide safety for pets in this chaotic time.

Sheltering is available at the LeConte Event Center in Pigeon Forge located at 2986 Teaster Lane. Neighboring Bradley County Emergency Management is assisting with volunteers and its AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer so that evacuees have a safe place to stay with their pets.

An additional shelter has opened at the Rocky Top Sports Park located at 1870 Sports World Blvd. Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley in Knoxville is also watching evacuees’ pets while families stay in the shelters.

Mandatory evacuations are underway for Gatlinburg including Mynatt Park neighborhood, East Foothills Road, Turkey Nest Road, Davenport Road and Savage Gardens areas. Shelters are available at the Gatlinburg Community Center at 156 Proffitt Road. Residents needing transportation to the shelter may request assistance by calling the Gatlinburg Police Department at 865-436-5181. Only service animals are allowed at the evacuation shelter.

“We send our thoughts and prayers to those being evacuated,” says Tom Sharp, CEO of AKC Reunite. “We hope that the trailers provide some peace of mind to those who need supplies for their pets as we know how important they are to our lives.”

The AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer is stocked with essential non-perishable supplies to house at least 65 pets during the first 72 hours after a disaster is declared, the time before federal or state resources can be mobilized. The trailer can be driven to a designated site to be deployed. Its contents are supplied based on North Carolina’s State Animal Response Team expertise in handling hurricanes, floods, fires and tornados. The supplies can be used to create a safe, temporary home-base for displaced animals.
