New Dr. Seuss Book About Pets To Be Released Tomorrow

Finally, the moment Seuss fans have been waiting for the past 25 years is here. A new book by the late Theodor Geisel is being published. And we are thrilled to hear that it’s about pets.

On Tuesday, July 28, Random House will release What Pet Should I Get?, written by Geisel (or as we know and love him, Dr. Seuss) before his death in 1991. The last book to be published by the Seuss franchise was Oh, The Places You’ll Go!, which was released in 1990.

The book follows two children as they go to a pet store and consider the options that abound. “The cat? Or the dog? The kitten? The pup?” the book reads. “Oh, boy! It is something to make a mind up.”

Considering the book is about the children from One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, we are pretty confident in our guess of which pet the children select. Of course, until we read it, we are going to keep our hopes up for a dog.

We wish we could give the story a bit of an update and send the children to a responsible AKC breeder rather than a pet store. But considering it is suspected to have been written between 1958 and 1962, according to Cathy Goldsmith of Random House, we’ll let it slide.

The manuscript and its accompanying illustrations were discovered by his Geisel’s widow, Audrey Geisel, recently. Reviews have been mixed, some thinking it was merely a set up for One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, which was published in 1960.

"Ted loved and had pets himself, as a young boy on up through adulthood, and that makes the wonderful excitement and buzz for this new book all the more special," Susan Brandt, president of licensing and marketing of Dr. Seuss Enterprises.
