New Children’s Book Introduces Kids to Dog Shows

An unexpected snowstorm in Manhattan had longtime dog-show judge and breeder Lee Canalizo cooped up inside a New York City townhome during the week of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. To pass the time, Canalizo began rhyming verses related to dog shows and writing them down. By the end of the evening she had drafted her first children’s book, "Peyton Goes to the Dog Show."

The hardcover book, which follows a young girl as she visits a dog show for the first time, features more than 50 dog breeds, from the most popular, such as Labrador Retrievers and Dachshunds, to rarer breeds, such as the Azawakh. The story comes to life through vibrant illustrations by celebrated French artist Martial Robin.

“[It is] truly a treasure of a book that will introduce children of all ages to the wonderful world of dog shows,” says Wayne Ferguson, president of the Morris & Essex Kennel Club and Kennel Club of Philadelphia.
