The Magic of Myth

By Gerald and Loretta Hausman

“In the beginning, so the old tales tell, there was the Creator, and there was the dog. Mankind, quite simply, had not yet been invented.

“We may imagine a fathomless universe, a spectral void, or we may sketch in our thoughts about the perfect Creator, but we don’t have to reach far to come up with a vision of our most ancient companion, our steadfast friend, the dog.

“In these old tales, we see that even before we possessed dogs, dogs possessed us. In this inevitable relationship, then, the underpinnings of the dog, not as man’s best friend but as God’s best friend, become clear.”
