What do you get when you selectively breed the Giant Schnauzer, Rottweiler, Airedale Terrier and fourteen other dog breeds? The majestic Black Russian Terrier! Originally developed in Russia to be part of the security forces, he would guard and protect military installations, borders, and prisons. Today, the BRT is more likely to protect his beloved family. It may be hard to believe how massive these adorable bundles of fur will grow up to be.

A full-grown adult will stand between 26-30 inches tall and weigh between 80-130 pounds. How big is that? This big!

Because their protective instinct is so strong, and because they're so large, training is crucial with Black Russian Terriers. Luckily, they're highly intelligent and trainable.

They excel at obedience training and hold their own in agility exercises, too.

Black Russian Terriers do need exercise, preferably playing with you.

Tennis, anyone?

Despite the muscular build, dense fur, and massive size, the BRT is really a house dog. He wants to be with you, sharing your life... all the time.

In fact, Black Russian Terriers not only want to be around their family, they also want physical contact, staying in close proximity to their humans.

Although their play may be too rough-and-tumble for some small children, a trained and socialized BRT can be remarkably gentle and patient with kids. In fact he can be a wonderful companion for children.

Yes, the Black Russian Terrier is a LOT of dog, and yes, training is especially important with such a protective breed. But the reward is a devoted, smart, magnificent, and loyal companion.
