Dog Registration Fee Increase
Frequently Asked Questions

Why has the increase been implemented now?
Answer: The last fee increase was in August 2001, more than 5 years ago. Over the years, AKC has periodically increased registration fees to offset inflation and operating cost increases as well as account for registration enhancements that offer added value. Basic fees are routinely evaluated and adjusted to allow us to ensure sound business operations, offer the highest level of customer service and maintain a healthy future for the AKC.

How will AKC use the additional revenue generated by the fee increase?
Answer: Like any other organization, AKC needs to keep its operating costs in line with our revenues in order to remain financially viable.  As a not-for-profit organization, we use revenue to support all the things we do for dogs and those who love them – including subsidizing AKC events, supporting the AKC Canine Health Foundation and the AKC Museum of the Dog, funding programs such as our scholarships, veterinary outreach, kennel inspections, our legislative program and providing disaster relief.

Does this fee increase make AKC dog registration too expensive?
Answer: At the new price of $20, AKC registration offers an exceptional value. Many of the values and benefits that are offered have been added in the past two years.  When you register your dog with the AKC you also receive a certificate for a free veterinary visit, a trial 60-day pet health insurance plan, and the AKC New Puppy Handbook – a combined value of over $80.

Furthermore AKC is the gold standard in purebred registry services and the ONLY major not-for-profit registry that routinely supports an array of important canine causes as mentioned above. We also believe our customers know that the greatest value of all is in the bond that we all enjoy and cherish with our canine companions. All of our revenues are invested into our mission including advocating for the purebred dog as a family companion, advancing canine health and well-being, protecting the rights of all dog owners and promoting responsible dog ownership. By registering with the AKC you support this mission and demonstrate your love for purebred dogs.

Is AKC planning to increase the litter registration fee?
Answer: No. The AKC litter registration fee will remain set at $25 plus $2 per puppy. AKC registration provides a tremendous value to breeders. In addition, AKC has introduced a number of initiatives to support breeders – for example, coupons for discounted litter registration, discounted registrations via the Full Litter Registration application, online litter registration, online breeder classifieds, and the AKC Breeder newsletter.  AKC remains committed to providing the best service available anywhere to our breeders.

How will the various registration packages be impacted by this increase?
Answer: The only increase in the package prices will be reflected in the additional $5 for the registration portion of the package. Therefore Gold Package and Silver Packages will be priced at $47 and $39 respectively.
