Make Next Year Your Dog’s Best Ever: 5 Great Dog Training Resolutions

AKC GoodDog! Helpline Trainer Breanne Long says don’t forget your dog when you are making your New Year’s resolutions for 2016, like try something new and fun with your dog. Kurtis of Kingfisher CAX DJ RATN CGC, (pictured) a member of the AKC Canine Partners program, loves AKC Coursing Ability tests –  a great way for dogs to get exercise and release their natural prey drive.

1. Train every day. You don't have to plan long training sessions; just take a handful of their food at each meal and practice some basics (sit, down, stay) with your dog before placing their bowl down.

2. Exercise more. Yes, with your dog! If your dog pulls on the leash, make it a resolution to teach him or her to walk on a loose leash. If time doesn't allow for training, try a no-pull harness or head halter as a quick aid to be able to walk your dog more easily.

3. Teach a new trick. Make a resolution to teach your dog a new trick. Choose something simple like 'shake' or 'spin' if your dog is young or you've never taught him any tricks. If you've already taught your dog a few tricks, try something more advanced such as 'roll over' or 'crawl.'

4. Try something new. Check out your local kennel club or training center and try out a new sport or activity with your dog! Some popular activities that don't require months of training include Barn Hunt, Dock Diving, Scent Work, and Lure Coursing.

5. Spend more time with your dog. This one is simple; no need to buy anything, go anywhere, or train anything. Simply spend a few extra minutes with your dog each day. Give your dog those additional few belly rubs, toss the ball once more when your dog asks, or give him or her another cuddle before you leave for work.
