• The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno is an ancient breed dating from the late 1400's and was used by farmers to provide additional meat for their tables. The Pequeno often accompanied the Portuguese explorers on their Caravels in the Mediterranean to help control vermin on the ships and catch rabbit and small game for the sailors.
• The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno was developed to hunt the harsh terrain of Portugal and designed to penetrate the thickets to gain access to its prey. They hunt singly or in small packs. They have tremendous endurance and are expected to hunt all day long, several days in a row without diminished performance.
• The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno emits a high-pitched bark when coursing its prey known as the 'Maticar', this allows the hunters to know where the dogs and prey are located.
• The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno is a rustic, hardy dog that lives well into its teens. It is a very healthy breed with few genetic problems.
