Peruvian Inca Orchid Did You Know?

  • The Peruvian Inca Orchid has been assigned the Hound Group designation.
  • The Peruvian Inca Orchid has been recorded in the Foundation Stock Service since 1996.
  • Other names for the breed include Pio, Peero Sin Pello Del Peru (Dog without hair of Peru), Perros Flora (Flower Dog), Moonflower Dog, Inca Hairless Dog and Peruvian Hairless Dog.
  • The Peruvian Inca Orchid is a medium-sized sighthound noted for its hairless variety, though it comes in a coated version as well.
  • The breed's name was changed in 1985, by request of the Kennel Club of Peru to "Perro sin pelo del Peru," to better reflect the country of origin. That is how the name is listed with FCI. The original name of the breed (Peruvian Inca Orchid/Moonflower Dog) is used in the United States.
  • The fundamental characteristic of the breed is the absence of hair on the body, except for small vestiges on the head, extremities and tail.
  • Pre-Inca pottery portrays the breed in great detail.
