- The parent club, the American Chesapeake Club, was founded in 1918.
- The original dogs sparking the Chesapeake breed were "Sailor"
and "Canton", Newfoundlands rescued from the wrecked American
Canton; these Newfoundlands possessed wonderful retriever qualities and
were interbred with other breeds to eventually produce the Chesapeake we
know today.
