American Kennel Club employees in Raleigh, North Carolina donated nearly three tons of food for families and pet owners in need during the 2014 AKC Pets & People Food Drive. At the August 21 weigh-in, volunteers wheeled cartloads of bags, boxes and cans from their desks to the shipping dock to be weighed and sorted. Collectively, staff members of the American Kennel Club, the AKC Canine Health Foundation, AKC Reunite, and PetPartners contributed 5,331 pounds of food and supplies.
The AKC Employee Activities Committee kicked off the food drive on August 1 by challenging interdepartmental teams and AKC affiliate organizations to donate the highest number of pounds per person. The winning team, which included the AKC Companion & Performance Events, Judging Operations, Companion Operations, Coonhounds, and Canine Good Citizen departments, donated an amazing 76.23 pounds per person.
The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina received over a ton of “people food”. This organization serves a network of partner agencies including soup kitchens, food pantries, and food distribution programs for children and adults.
“Your food drive weighed 2,220 pounds, fantastic! From this we will be able to provide 1,869 meals to people in our community,” said Linda Fisher, Special Events and Food Drive Manager.
AKC staff transported more than 3,100 pounds of pet food and supplies to the SPCA of Wake County’s Pet Food Pantry, which offers temporary assistance to pet owning families in need by providing a month’s supply of pet food.
