AKC Pet Disaster Relief Debuts Help For NC Pets
With representatives from the NC Department of Agriculture and NC Department of Public Safety on hand, the first-ever AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer was donated to Emergency Management in Pamlico County, North Carolina.
AKC Reunite created AKC Pet Disaster Relief to help local Emergency Management organizations be prepared during the first 72 hours following a disaster, the critical time before FEMA support and services are deployed.
When a crisis hits, pet owners are often asked to leave their homes with little or no notice, but thankfully, laws are now in place that require local municipalities to prepare and care for their citizens and their pets in the event of an emergency or natural disaster.
The AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailers house dog crates, cat carriers, litter, microchips, scanners, bowls, collars, leashes, cleaning supplies and much more. It creates a safe, temporary home-base for at least 50 pets immediately after a disaster is declared.
The materials can be used at co-location shelters where people evacuate with their pets, or at stand-alone emergency animal shelters for displaced animals. \
The trailer that was donated to Pamlico County Emergency Management today was just the first of many trailers that will be distributed across the country. The first trailer was made possible with the support of the Forsyth Kennel Club in Winston-Salem, including club members Patrick and Almira Dallas, the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America, the English Springer Spaniel Foundation and the American Chinese Crested Club.
