Summer Intern Project Descriptions for 2009
2009 Project Descriptions
We are currently identifying areas within the AKC where internships are going to be available this year. Here is a sample of some projects we may have.
Archives – New York City
Work with the Archives department doing a variety of tasks including processing several new collections to the archives. This involves creating a preliminary inventory, analyzing the collection, sorting, arranging, applying simple preservation methods, and drafting a finding aid. May also transcribe AKC’s Board meeting minutes from the 20th century and revisions to the Dog show rules and regulations. May perform biographical research for oral history interviews using primary and secondary resources, including assisting with audio-visual equipment and transcribing the interview. This year the intern will assist with research associated with the AKC’s 125th anniversary.
Applicants with a Bachelors’ degree in social science/humanities or familiarity with archive is helpful. Students working towards their Master’s degree or Certificate program in archive/records management, historic preservation, library/information science, museum studies, history, are preferred.
Canine Health Foundation – Raleigh, North Carolina
CHF has 400 completed Research Grants which need to be converted over to the OnBase computer document management system. Documents will need to be scanned, saved, and electronically filed while performing quality control throughout the process. The selected intern will need to be detailed oriented and organized to ensure correct handling of the documents and assigning of document attributes. Will need to be comfortable in learning new computer systems
This internship will provide someone with an interest in research to learn about the grant making process as well as providing the opportunity to learn about current canine research occurring across the globe.
Communications Department – New York City
If you have an active interest in learning the ropes of a career in media/public relations and have a basic understanding about what we do in PR, consider an internship in Communications. Be involved with the planning and coordination of the AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day and other PR efforts including media pitching, writing and internet research projects. Specific focus of the internship will be on social networking and online tools to attract new members.
Requirements include an educational focus on Public Relations, Communications or Journalism, and a strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite. Good grammar and above-average writing skills are crucial, as is attention to detail in all work. Must be bright, energetic and outgoing with excellent verbal skills and the confidence to both brainstorm actively with the PR Team and pitch ideas to the media. A background in the fancy is preferred but not mandatory.
Event Operations – Raleigh, NC
The primary project would be to develop the online newsletter for Event Committees. The intern would then create a template for future issues as well as incorporate recent rule changes. In addition to the newsletter that is sent to event chairpersons and secretaries, the individual would be developing a Mailroom Operations manual for their division.
Exceptional writing and grammar skills; word processing and some web publishing experience needed. Background in AKC Event Management would be beneficial. A major in English, Journalism, or Communications required and some writing/editing experience helpful.
Marketing Department – New York City
By working on a project for the AKC Humane Fund, Inc., you will gain experience in marketing, promotions, public relations, and event planning.
The selected intern will work on creating campaigns by building awareness through writing letters, ad copy and preparing for presentations within the purebred dog fancy and beyond. At the same time will be researching opportunities for exposure to be viewed in other vehicles of communication outside of AKC’s monthly publications. Provides tracking results and activities including database management.
Requirements include course study in Marketing and/or Communications. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required as is strong word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software skills. Experience with graphics software a plus.
Special Service/Events Operations – Raleigh, NC
Assist current Operations Staff with the processing, and review of eligibility criteria while handling correspondence for the Juniors program. Will create and maintain a contact list of prior Junior Scholarship recipients and create a file of articles for the Juniors Newsletter. The intern will be reviewing records of the Juniors eligibility for the next AKC Eukanuba show.
Requirements include excellent skills in MS word and Excel. Must be detailed oriented with strong organizational skills. Involvement in AKC Junior Showmanship would be a plus but not required.
Information Technology – Raleigh, NC
We need an Intern that can:
- Develop a maintainable system dependency grid that shows major systems and departments impacted.
- Further refine that system dependency grid by showing internal servers that support said major systems.
- Review forms (document types) in publication and work with all departments to identify a form OWNER or CHAMPION for each form. Using CMS update the DOCUMENT-TYPE master table with owner/champion information.
- Develop a DATABASE driven system dependency grid that shows major databases in use and the systems and departments that rely upon them.
