PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Online litter registrations grew 50 percent in 2005. Enhancements to online registrations enable breeders and owners to quickly and easily register litters and dogs at akc.org, 24 hours a day, seven days a week—the kind of helpful innovation we intend to continue.

Participation in our sport keeps growing. 2005 set a new record, with over 3,006,000 event entries, a one-year increase of more than 104,000. There were 18,542 member, licensed, and sanctioned conformation, performance, and companion events, an increase of 12 percent, mainly attributable to the introduction of our newest event, rally, and the still-growing popularity of agility. We also experienced double-digit growth in coonhound events, herding trials and tests, and Tracking Excellent and Variable Surface Tracking events.

The Inspections and Investigations department visited more than 4,800 kennels, brokers, and pet shops during 2005. Inspections staff reached out to breeders by attending breeder-association meetings and conferences, giving presentations and providing knowledge about AKC services.

We produced and launched a TV public-service announcement about child safety around dogs. Titled "Promise," it focuses on the importance of teaching children how to behave around dogs and has reached an audience of millions. The Communications department cooperated with hundreds of local AKC clubs and dog organizations around the country to promote responsible dog ownership. AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day was celebrated with more than 350 activities, resulting in unprecedented numbers of attendees and nationwide media coverage.

Our Canine Legislation department promoted bills that benefit the well-being of dogs and worked to defeat bills that would hinder the rights of responsible dog owners. The department worked on over 500 national and local bills and ordinances.
