Publications

The Editorial, Creative Services, Circulation, and Advertising departments, and AKC book publishing, comprise the Publications division.

The division enjoyed an upswing in revenues, due to an increase in advertising sales. In February, Publications staff hosted advertising-sales representatives from J. L. Farmikas at a two-day conference in New York.

The AKC New Puppy Handbook was launched in September as an added incentive to AKC registration. The colorful pocket-sized guide to puppy care and training is sent to all new AKC registrants, making it an attractive vehicle for national advertisers.

Response to the new publication from first-time customers and seasoned fanciers was encouraging.

AKC Family Dog reported a combined paid and controlled circulation of 175,000. Family Dog was conceived as a means of reaching a broader purebred-pet-owning public and to add value to the Gold Level registration package of goods and services. Gold sales have increased since the magazine was launched in 2003. Aimed at new or casual purebred owners, Family Dog is a key component of AKC public outreach.

In January, Family Dog expanded its publication schedule from quarterly to bimonthly.

The monthly AKC Gazette is the official journal for the sport of purebred dogs. Since 1889, it has been the home of in-depth and authoritative coverage of issues that matter to the core fancy. The Circulation department reported a Gazette subscription-renewal rate of 70 percent.

Other publications include AKC Awards and the monthly Gazette supplement, Events Calendar. New to the Publications realm in 2005: the "Your AKC" online newsletter (with a circulation of 675,000) and Internet advertising sales.

Staff prepared the milestone 20th edition of the AKC Complete Dog Book for an early 2006 release by Ballantine Books.

At the annual gala of the Dog Writers Association of America, AKC Publications won five Maxwell Medallions.

The Gazette won the DWAA's the Best All-Breed Magazine award for the third time in four years, and the AKC Annual Report was Best Special Publication for the second straight year.
