Communications

The Communications division utilizes print and electronic media to enhance AKC image and public awareness in media outlets nationwide.

Communications is charged with creating press releases and related materials to promote major initiatives, such as the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, and to put forth AKC positions on important national news stories. In 2005, updates on the PAWS legislation were issued regularly. AKC-generated features based on the annual registration rankings were picked up by the mainstream media: USA Today, the Washington Post, and other local and national outlets.

Releases describing hurricane-relief efforts by the AKC and its member clubs were disseminated to the media during the crisis. Communications staff participated in and helped to coordinate multiple airlifts of displaced dogs from the Gulf Region to suitable housing around the country.

Staff works with outside professionals to create public service announcements. The print PSAs, which put forth various AKC responsible dog ownership messages, reached more than 2.5 million readers in 2005; video PSAs were seen by a television audience of more than 27 million.

Division staff oversaw the photo session at AKC headquarters for Sports Illustrated magazine's "Sports Tribes" feature, in which AKC employees and their dogs were featured in a two-page portrait.

The third annual AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day flagship events in New York City and Raleigh were well-attended and drew considerable press attention. More than 350 member clubs and other organizations nationwide held local RDO events in September. The AKC and affiliated clubs received proclamations and congratulatory letters from the mayors of New York City and Raleigh, and the governors of New York, Delaware, Oregon, and California, among other public officials.

The Club Communications department works with AKC-member and -licensed clubs to communicate to the public in a unified voice. The department's web pages and e-mail newsletter keep clubs apprised of new AKC public-relations, advertising, and promotional initiatives, and offer tools and tips for promoting and pursuing media coverage for local events.
