Companion Events

The Companion Events division comprises the Obedience, Tracking, Agility, and Rally departments.

Companion Events reported an increase of 25 percent in events and an 11 percent increase in entries for 2005. Much of this growth is attributable to the introduction of AKC Rally on January 1.

Rally, in which a dog-and-handler team navigate a course of exercises according to sequentially numbered signs, is run in conjunction with obedience trials. In an enormously successful debut year, 1,066 rally trials attracted 70,718 entries.

The new event holds great crossover appeal: Many rally handlers have been training and competing in traditional obedience, and 27 percent of dogs who titled in rally also held obedience titles.

The AKC Agility department reported another year of growth, with events up 9 percent. There were 1,806 AKC Agility events and 635,202 entries in 2005, and 423 Master Agility Champion (MACH) titles earned.

The AKC National Agility Championship, run as part of the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in Tampa, Florida, had an entry of 686. Animal Planet taped the event for a February 2006 broadcast.

The AKC/USA World Agility Team went to Valladolid, Spain, in September to compete in the annual World Agility Championship. Clean Run magazine, K9 Advantix, and Iams sponsored the AKC/USA team.

Companion Events reported 2,486 AKC Obedience events and 129,844 entries in 2005.

An entry of America's 134 top OTCH-pointed dogs represented 56 breeds from 39 states the AKC National Obedience Invitational, run as part of the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship.

In March the AKC/USA World Team returned to Birmingham, England, to compete at the second annual Obedience World Cup competition, held in conjunction with the Crufts dog show.

The AKC sanctioned 388 tracking events in 2005, with 1,740 entries. The Champion Tracker title was earned by 23 dogs.

The 2005 AKC National Tracking Invitational at the spectacular 8,000-acre Biltmore estate in Asheville, North Carolina, drew 10 of the nation's top dog-and-handler tracking teams.

The Versatile Companion Dog (VCD) title recognizes dogs that earn a combination of titles in obedience, agility, and tracking. In 2005, VCD titles were earned by 261 dogs, representing 52 breeds.

Companion Events field representatives presented 32 well-attended seminars nationwide, covering the division's full spectrum of events.

In March, Curt A. Curtis was named Director of Companion Events.
