Dog Show Judges

The Judging Operations and Registered Handlers departments, and the Executive Field Staff, comprise the Dog Show Judges division. Judging Operations schedules interviews and processes applications for approval to judge. The department also considers eligibility for visiting judges. Judging Operations processed 326 approved-breed judges applications and 125 new-breed applications in 2005.

Eighteen conformation field representatives covered 1,373 (98 percent) of the year's all-breed shows. The field staff helps exhibitors, show committees, and judges understand and implement AKC rules and policies. Additionally, they interview, observe, evaluate, and report on judges and prospective judges.

The director of Field Services is responsible for inspecting proposed and existing show sites with regard to general suitability and with a special regard to the welfare and safety of dogs and exhibitors. Findings are coordinated with the Event Plans department to determine future site approvals.

The Registered Handlers program promotes the health and welfare of dogs in the care of handlers, educates consumers and the fancy in general, and recognizes handlers who meet established criteria. At year-end, there were 154 fully accredited AKC Registered Handlers.

In collaboration with the field staff, AKC Registered Handlers staged juniors clinics at shows. Twelve sessions were attended by 424 young fanciers. The AKC Registered Handlers program maintains the George Ward Memorial Scholarship Fund, assisting individuals committed to acquiring the skills necessary to be competent professional handlers.

The fund enables future handlers to pursue a college education while apprenticed to AKC Registered Handlers. In December, three Ward scholarships of $1,000 were awarded.

The Dog Show Judges division compiles the annual Judges Directory; maintains the searchable schedule of judging assignments at akc.org; and administers the 50-Year Judges program, acknowledging those celebrating a half-century in the fancy's service. In 2005, all-breed judge Dr. Glenn T. Fancy was honored.
