Audit and Control

The Support Services and Internal Audit departments, and the Veterinary Outreach program, comprise the Audit and Control division.

The Veterinary Outreach department promotes the AKC to the veterinary community and establishes alliances with universities, researchers, practitioners, and related professional organizations. The Hartz Mountain Corporation is the program's official sponsor.

In July, representatives from the AKC and Hartz began a 12-month schedule of presentations at 15 of the 28 U.S. accredited schools of veterinary medicine. The sessions include overviews of both organizations and question-and-answer periods. The AKC and Hartz distributed a copy of The AKC Complete Dog Book to every graduating senior from the 28 vet schools.

The AKC Veterinary Network was launched in October. The network provides valuable resources to veterinarians and their clients nationwide. The program also provides vets and their clients with access to a free, renewable library of AKC educational materials.

AKC Companion Animal Recovery contributed $100,000 to the 2005–2006 Veterinary Scholarship Fund, allowing the AKC to disperse $160,000 to veterinary students based on academic achievement, involvement in the sport of purebred dogs, and financial need.

The AKC and the Hartz Mountain Corporation, along with the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, established the AKC/Hartz Veterinary Technician Scholarships. A total of $45,000 in scholarships was awarded to 29 students from 20 accredited schools of veterinary technology.

The Internal Audit department provides an independent examination and evaluation of the adequacy and effectiveness of the AKC system of internal and generational controls and operating procedures. The department reviews procedures and tests controls, concludes as to their adequacy, and makes recommendations for improvements.

As a continuation of the Quality Initiative that was launched in 2004, the Audit and Control division instituted a formal quality program through the creation of the Business Excellence department, dedicated to continuing business improvement. Business Excellence is also responsible for creation of the AKC Dashboard, which allows management to review departmental quality, and production measures and metrics, daily. Business Excellence staff has received training in Six Sigma process-improvement tools and methodology.

The Support Services department fulfills printing, shipping, purchasing, inventory, facility management, mail, and other vital functions. In 2005, Support Services handled 7 million pieces of mail outgoing and 1.5 million pieces incoming, and processed 110,000 shipping orders.
